Somatic methods

“The sensorimotor system is a mechanism of fundamental importance to our experience and behavior (…). Somatic exercises can transform the way we experience life, how we perceive the relationship between mind and body, and the extent to which we feel a sense of agency and responsibility for ourselves.”

Thomas Hanna, Somatics, 1988

At Pracownia Somatyczna, we believe that the path to genuine, lasting well-being and health leads through: 🧘 harmony between body and mind, 🤹 authentic self-expression, and 🖌️ creativity — all of which arise from conscious inner experience. This experience passes through a personal set of filters: individual sensitivity, the body’s history, temperament, emotions, ways of perceiving, and a unique language of feeling.

We create a space where different traditions and methods of working with the body come together, united by a shared premise: the body, experienced from within — through one’s own senses, sensations, and associations — is a legitimate source of self-knowledge. Every person has the right to their own experience and their own interpretation of it.

At the studio, we gather, present, and promote somatic practices recognized around the world. Our aim is to make somatics accessible, understandable, and present in everyday life — as a tool for regulation, health, expression, and personal growth.

We offer various methods, such as:

Feldenkrais Method

Body-Mind Centering®

Ilan Lev Method® (ILM)

Bodynamic®

Somatic forms of dance and improvisational movement

Breath work and regulation practices

We present these approaches in a spirit of partnership, without hierarchy — so that each person can choose what resonates most with them and experience the richness of different approaches to embodiment.

One of our aims is to counteract sensorimotor amnesia, described by Thomas Hanna — the gradual loss of conscious access to our own patterns of movement, tension, and sensation. Today, this process is accelerating more than ever before.

📱 Long hours in front of screens, 🪑 a sedentary lifestyle, 🌐 digital communication replacing real contact, and 🧠 constant overstimulation and stress cause us to lose the subtlety of sensation, the spontaneity of movement, and our natural ability to self-regulate. Somatics helps restore this lost space — bringing back sensation, fluidity, presence, and connection with our own experience.

Pracownia Somatyczna is a place where you can: 🌱 experience a variety of somatic methods, 🌬️ develop awareness of the body and movement, 🤝 meet in an atmosphere of openness and curiosity, ✨ discover your own path to well-being, presence, and embodiment

We invite you to a place where the body is listened to and experience is respected. Here, everyone can find their own method, their own rhythm, and their own way of being in the world.

What is somatics

Thomas Hanna introduced the term “somatics” in 1976 to describe a field concerned with experiencing the body from within and regaining conscious control over movement and muscular tension.

🧠 1. “Soma” – the body experienced from within

Hanna emphasized that a human being is a soma—a living organism that experiences itself through internal perception, rather than merely a “body” observed from the outside. Somatics therefore refers to the subjective, conscious sensing and directing of one’s own body.

🔄 2. Sensorimotor Amnesia (SMA)

One of Hanna’s key concepts is sensorimotor amnesia—the loss of conscious control over muscles resulting from stress, habitual patterns, and everyday life. Hanna argued that many problems commonly attributed to aging are actually the result of SMA rather than biological age.

🌀 3. Somatics as education, not therapy

Hanna described his method as Hanna Somatic Education—a learning process that:

  • increases awareness of movement

  • teaches the release of movement

  • restores natural flexibility and freedom of movement

It is a form of neuromuscular education, rather than massage or manual therapy.

🌱 4.Freedom and self-regulation

Hanna believed that human beings possessed the capacity for self-learning, self-responsibility and self-regulation — and that somatics, the key which unlocks these abilities.

🧩 5. The aim of somatics

The aims of somatics include:

  • restoring comfort in the body,

  • reducing pain and tension,

  • improving the quality of movement,

  • restoring natural, fluid motor function,

  • increasing awareness of oneself as an embodied being.

✨ Summary

According to Thomas Hanna, somatics is the study of the conscious, internal experience of the body and an educational process that restores freedom of movement and release chronic tension by regaining control over the neuromuscular system
